Our History
Founded in 1974 by the the Elk Grove Ministerial Association and Bob Fossgreen at the United Methodist Church, what started as an individual act of kindness and a serving of hope has evolved from a small food closet into a lifeline and critical resource for 50 years. The Elk Grove Food Bank Services (EGFBS) has continued to expand to serve the needs of food insecure individuals in the Elk Grove Region and south county. In 2003, EGFBS formed a Board of Directors and became a 501(c)3 in 2004. Since 2009 the food bank has grown from two programs to 16 programs, two part-time employees to 15 employees and hundreds of dedicated and compassionate volunteers. This is truly what EGFBS is all about. Staff, volunteers and our board of directors working together in this joyful and essential work. EGFBS is a seven day a week operation and open six days a week to serve those in need. Our programs serve low-income families, children, seniors, chronically ill, migrant families, disabled, working poor, unemployed and the homeless.
All services are provided at no cost.
