Who Is Eligible for CalFresh?

Eligibility is based on household size, income, and residency status. You may qualify if your household’s gross monthly income (before taxes) falls within these limits:

Who Is Not Eligible?

Undocumented individuals do not qualify for CalFresh.
However, parents and guardians can apply on behalf of children who are legal residents.

Good news: CalFresh is not considered a public charge, so applying for or receiving benefits will not impact your path to U.S. citizenship

What Can I Buy with CalFresh?

CalFresh helps you purchase essential food items, including:

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Dairy products
  • Meat, fish, and poultry
  • Bread and cereals
  • Infant formula
  • Seeds and plants that grow food

What Can’t I Buy?

CalFresh benefits cannot be used for:

  • Hot or prepared food intended to be eaten in-store
  • Alcohol or tobacco products
  • Non-food items (toiletries, household supplies, etc.)
  • Vitamins or medicines

How Does CalFresh Work?

If approved, you’ll receive an EBT (Electronic Benefits Transfer) card, which works just like a debit card.

  • Use it at checkout to pay for eligible food
  • Funds are automatically deducted from your account
  • Accepted at most grocery stores, convenience stores, and many farmers’ markets

Wellness Bag Program

The Wellness Bag Program is a supplemental food program designed to provide vital nourishment to individuals who are housebound with a medical condition that prevents them from coming to the Food Bank.

Those who qualify for this program receive non-perishable food boxes along with fresh produce delivered to their place of residence. Although this program does not include everything that is needed for proper nutrition, it is nutritionally beneficial and valued by those who receive it.

Who Can Apply?

You must reside in one of the zip codes served by the Elk Grove Food Bank (95624, 95757, 95758, 95828, and 95829) and physically unable to come to the Food Bank.  Proof of residency is required.

How Do I Apply?
